The Music

Before you dive into the awesome mixtapes posted here, check out this video of a live mix.

What happens behind the booth

So just what in the heck am I doing back there behind the decks? I’m glad you asked.
In late 2015 I was invited to present on the art of mixing music at a national conference for professional wedding DJs from all around Australia. This is one of the videos I created to demonstrate how I mix music live at weddings. Sure, I could have just played these 3 songs one after the other from beginning to end – but where’s the fun in that? Besides, Spotify’s got that covered.

mixology 101

Some of these mixes are as old as dirt, and many of the songs featured are so 3 years ago. But, what these mixtapes are really designed to demonstrate are my mixing skills and the way I transition….I don’t just press ‘play’! Take a listen and see for yourself.

This mixtape is the final hour of a huge seven hour set at Kat and James’ wedding.  It’s heavy on the hip-hop as per their request.  There were so many songs to pack in to this last hour that many of them were mixed out of pretty quickly to make room for the next one and to keep the party jumping.  Sorry, but this is not your average wedding DJ set. (Not sorry).

Mashed Up Beyond All Recognition – this mixtape features mostly hip-hop acapellas layered over some beautiful instrumentals from other tracks you may recognise, all expertly mixed by Cut a Rug’s very own DJ AD (aka Aaron).  If you like mash-ups, you’ll love these.

A cacophony of indie, JJJ, hip hop and acoustic all rolled up into a neat little 30 minute package. This mix reached #1 on the indie chart, #1 on the bass chart, and #2 on the hip hop chart on mix cloud. Enjoy.

Here’s a another mixtape for you – it’s a nod to the 90s, and features a bunch of random songs that I kinda dig but almost never play. I actually put this together for a fashion parade at a bridal expo back in 2014. The designer hated it and gave me evils for the whole show. Enjoy!

Here’s a mixtape I made for the A Darling Affair wedding expo way back in 2013. You can click here for more info and a track list.

This is a mix I made a couple of years back while we were living in Thailand. It starts off with some chilled out grooves and works its way up nicely to a funky Latin style vibe. If you enjoy Thievery Corporation, Mo’Horizons, Quantic and Hôtel Costes, you’ll probably enjoy this little mixtape. Click here for a full track-listing.

Mini Mixes

If you’re pressed for time, then check out these mini mixes. These were created as promos a couple of years ago and feature roughly 10 songs in about 2 minutes of mixing. I do not mix this fast when playing live – these were put together using Ableton Live.

This mini mix features some solid gold funk and disco. Click here for a list of the tracks used.

Here’s another 2 minute mini mix. This promo was put together a couple of years ago. Most of these tracks have stood the test of time and continue to rock dance floors night in, night out. Click here for a list of the tracks used.

Here are a couple of DJ AD bootleg edits for your listening pleasure.

This re-work of Al Green’s classic tune, “Let’s Stay Together” features a new beat, an extended bridge and outro. This was a lot of fun to put together. Click here for more information on this track, or if you’d like a download link. Hope you like what you hear!

The Champs meet Kanye West in this fun little mashup. This edit combines the acapella of ‘Gold Digger’ with The Champs classic ‘Tequila’. Click here for more information on this little number, to download, or to follow DJ AD on SoundCloud. Salud!
